Dear friends,
 

We are excited to announce the Montfort 4rd International Cello Competition. The competition is held in an online format for all categories (A, B, C, and D).

The competition is open to cellists of all nations. All participants (Categories A, B, C, and D) will receive an achievement diploma. We wish you the best of health and the very best to all those taking part in this competition!


 

CONDITIONS OF PARTICIPATION

 

All Categories (A, B, C, and D):
 

The auditioning process is as follows: Participants will submit their recordings as web-posted links. This format allows for a global assessment without the requirement of travel.

All videos must be unedited, with a minimal quality of Full HD 1920x1080.

None of the recordings should be more than six months old at the time of application.

All videos must include any amount of pieces (within the given time frame) for solo instrument or instrument with piano.


 

The competition consists of one round for Categories A and B and two rounds for Categories C and D.
 

Categories A and B:
 

The repertoire can include short pieces, movements from concertos, sonatas, and suites from any historical period (Baroque, Classical, Romantic, XX-XXI century). The duo sonata genre is also allowed.

All pieces with accompaniment must be performed with the accompaniment of a piano.

All tutti parts of the piano score may be shortened.

 

Categories C and D:

Special Recognition for Category D

In addition to the financial reward, the 1st prize winner of Category D will have the exclusive opportunity to perform as a soloist with the Montfort Chamber Orchestra at the Gala Concert in Austria.
 

No pieces may be repeated in the second round. The first or second round must include at least one virtuoso piece or one piece with virtuoso parts.

All pieces with accompaniment must be performed with the accompaniment of a piano.

All tutti parts of the piano score may be shortened.


Please note that the competition does not provide or arrange accommodation or traveling expenses. All costs related to travel and stay in Austria remain the responsibility of the winner.


 

Winners

The winners will be featured on a permanent web page and official social media channels with their portrait and prize-winning videos.


 

Repertoire, timing, and age categories:

 

Round I
 

A: age 11-14 from 7 to 10 minutes

B: age 15-17 from 10 to 13 minutes

C: age 18-23 from 17 to 20 minutes

D: age 24-28 from 22 to 25 minutes

 

Round II
 

C: age 18-23 from 17 to 20 minutes

D: age 24-28, Joseph Haydn (1732-1809) – Cello concerto in C-Dur or in D-Dur (Bärenreiter, Henle, or Maurice Gendron-Schott edition. Cadence of your choice.)
 

 


 

Prizes


Category B and C:
 

1st prize: 500€

2nd prize: 300€

3rd prize: 200€
 

Category D:
 

1st prize: 1000€ + Gala-Concert

2nd prize: 750€

3rd prize: 500€


 

Note on Accompaniment:

As the competition is held online, participants are responsible for arranging their own piano accompaniment for their video recordings.

Participation Fee (non-refundable): 100€ per participant.

 

Results
The results of the competition will be posted on the Montfort Cello Competition website two weeks after the adjudication period. All decisions made by the jury are final and shall not be appealed.

Deadline

 

Application deadline: November 30, 2026.

Payment deadline: November 27, 2026.

The competition will take place between December 8, 2026, and December 14, 2026.
